Recap of July 14, WOW Dems General Meeting

July Meeting #1July Meeting #2

We had a great turnout for our July 14th meeting. Sharon Wilson, environmental activist and citizen expert on fracking and the environment gave a great presentation which was both enlightening and frightening. She spoke about the climate change consequences of methane gas (which comes from fracking shale) and how it is a more powerful agent of global warming than carbon dioxide. She spoke about HB40, the bill which banned the ban on fracking in Denton. See below for more info:

WOW Dems July General Meeting – Update: Fracking in Texas – Thursday, July 14, 2016

WOW Dems July General Meeting – Update: Fracking in Texas – Thursday, July 14, 2016

Sharon WilsonOur next General Meeting will be held Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the Environmental Education Center. Our speaker will be Sharon Wilson, well-known environmental activist, Gulf regional organizer for the Texas Oil and Gas Accountability Project. Sharon is considered the leading citizen expert on the Barnett Shale and the go-to person whether it’s top EPA officials, major news networks, national environmental organizations, or residents facing the shock of eminent domain and the devastating effects of natural gas development in their own backyards.

She will give an overview of fracking in Texas and speak on the HB40 bill which severely restricts the ability of Texas towns to regulate local oil and gas drilling. She will also speak on the health and environmental impact of fracking and methane gas.

We want to honor trauma surgeon Dr. Brian Williams, who gave his all and spoke from his heart after treating many injured Dallas police officers at Parkland Hospital. Listen to his poignant words here.  We will be  collecting donations of new unused homemade or newly purchased items such as slippers, pillows, quilts, robes, stuffed animals or dolls. We will bring them to Parkland Hospital this weekend to say thank you to Dr. Williams for his work, and for his strong message on need for open dialog on race relations. Cash donations will also be helpful. Thank you!

Meet and greet: 6:30 pm. Program 6:45 pm

WOW Dems Candidate Forum and Endorsements

WOW Dems Candidate Forum and Endorsements

Candidate Forum #2 Candidate Forum #4

The WOW Dems Candidate Forum, moderated by Donna Wood Martin, was a great success. Everyone was riveted as they listened to the candidates speak on a variety of topics. They spoke eloquently about the need for more public education funding, equal pay for equal work, Medicaid expansion, the environment, common sense gun laws, immigration and the need to stop government from intruding into women’s decisions about their own bodies. One candidate pointed out how the Republican-controlled Texas legislature wants to waste money on increasing border patrol; money that would be better spent on education and raising teacher’s pay.

The candidates present were: WOW Dems own Denise Hamilton, Karen Jacobs, Victoria Neave, Gnanse Nelson, Dorotha Ocker, Ramona Portlock-Brumfield and Laura Irvin. Also present were: Adam Bell, Jan McDowell, Dennise Garcia, Scott Coleman and John Bryant (husband of WOW Dem Nancy Bryant).

An information booklet was handed out to all in attendance and at the end of the forum, WOW Dems members voted to endorse all 12 Democratic candidates!

Candidate Forum #5

Check their websites for more information and volunteer to help their campaigns! We need these great candidates to represent us locally, in Austin and in Washington, DC!

A “Powerful” WOW Dems Event

A “Powerful” WOW Dems Event

Purse

WOW Dems members and guests filled the Rooftop Event Spot in Plano on Saturday, February 27, 2016 for the Power of the Purse fundraiser. Attendees were treated to a delicious made-to-order pasta lunch and had an opportunity to preview and bid on an assortment of fantastic purses, handbags, and tote bags in the silent auction.

After lunch, Regina Montoya delivered an inspirational, informative, and motivational keynote address highlighting the consequential issues facing us today, such as poverty and education, as well as the importance of this election cycle. Ms. Montoya related stories of her work with Judge Sarah Hughes to make the point that we are the ones who have to make our voices heard by running for office and supporting those who do. This is critical because “if we don’t do it, who will”? Her message of “One person can make a difference” resonated with the crowd. After the keynote, the Irma Rangel Women’s Leadership High School choir (under the direction of Arkette Baptiste) provided the afternoon’s entertainment. These young women wowed the audience with their vocal talents and received a standing ovation.

WOW Dems would like to thank Ms. Montoya, The Irma Rangel choir, our generous sponsors, the event committee and all attendees for a wonderful and profitable event which will provide support for local women candidates in this year’s elections!
