WOW Dems May Newsletter

WOW Dems May Newsletter

Our membership numbers continue to build just like the excitement around the state convention and November elections. Thanks again to all who have joined WOW Dems and to those who are participating in all of our events and opportunities for activism.

We are very excited to announce our first fundraiser luncheon, Wearing it for the Win, to be held on Saturday, August 23 at Regal Manor in Frisco. Our fundraising committee is excited to tell you that Gloria Campos, former long-time anchor with Channel 8 news, has graciously agreed to be our keynote speaker. At this luncheon, we will celebrate women in politics and highlight the use of fashion to achieve social and political goals.

Mark your calendars NOW so you don’t miss this special event. Tickets will go on sale in July. WOW Dems members and sponsors will get the first chance at limited seating. We are seeking sponsorships for this special event. Please respond to this email or click here if you are interested in a great opportunity to lend your name to our effort.

Third quarterly meeting of 2014

Barb Walters, Program Chair, has invited Sarah Slamen to be our featured speaker at our July 10 meeting. Ms. Slamen received national attention during her public testimony regarding the controversial SB1, which was famously filibustered by Senator Wendy Davis. You can see what happened when Ms. Slamen delivered her remarks at the State Capitol. She has gone on to make many appearances on MSNBC. We are thrilled to have her talk to WOW Dems about her experiences and tell us what she is doing now.

We will once again meet at the Environmental Education Center, 4116 W. Plano Pkwy, in Plano. Meet and greet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with our program beginning at 7 p.m.

We will have Wendy Davis yard signs available featuring our very own design. Suggested donation is $8. Remember – funds raised by WOW Dems will help support our programs as well as women candidates.

The Ladies Room

WOW Dems is working to help support The Ladies Room at the Texas Democratic Convention to be held in Dallas on June 27 & 28. The Ladies Room offers a unique opportunity to network, take a break from convention activities, and participate in lively panel discussions focusing on issues important to women. Topics include education, health care, women county chairs, and young women in leadership. Friday night entertainment will feature a poetry slam with nationally known poets.

The Ladies Room is not a fundraiser and is seeking funds only to defray the cost of the event. If you can make a donation, large or small, please follow this link. All convention attendees are welcome to stop by The Ladies Room during your stay at the convention center.

WOW Dems – How to Get Involved

To get the most out of WOW Dems, we encourage you to join one of our committees. Most of our organization’s work takes place at the committee level, and while we will have quarterly meetings and other social and political events and activities throughout the year, joining a committee is the best way to get know members and build relationships within our community.
