Member Update

WOW Dems Members:

You are first to hear this news. Save the date for “Wearing it for the Win” on Saturday, August 23 at the Regal Manor in Frisco. Our fundraising committee is excited to announce that Gloria Campos, former long-time anchor with Channel 8 news, has graciously agreed to be our keynote speaker. At this luncheon, we will celebrate women in politics and highlight the use of fashion to achieve social and political goals.

As part of the festivities, we will have a “resale fashion show” with members and special guests modeling outfits purchased at resale shops that support women’s causes. If you are interested in receiving more information about modeling, please reply to this message and we will send you the criteria. This will be a “limited seating” event and WOW Dems members will be first to know when ticket information becomes available. This is sure to be a memorable event.

Don’t forget that the B.R.O.A.D.S. book club will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28th. We will be discussing The Whites of Their Eyes by Jill Lepore. Note: the location for the May meeting has been changed to my home. Please email for address and directions.

We had an outstanding meeting on April 10 with eleven new members joining our group. There is power in numbers and, with your help, our group will be a formidable player in Texas politics. Erica Krause, Deputy Field Director, talked about the work Battleground Texas is doing to elect Wendy Davis as our next governor and turn Texas blue. There are numerous opportunities for us to join forces with BGTX in this effort. Several phone banks are held each week at the DPCC office in east Plano as well as events in private homes. Go to the BGTX website for details.

Barb Walters, Program Chair, has invited Sarah Slamen to be the featured speaker at our July 10 meeting. Ms. Slamen received national attention during her public testimony regarding the controversial SB1, which was famously filibustered by Senator Wendy Davis. You can see what happened when Ms. Slamen delivered her remarks at the State Capitol. She has gone on to make many appearances on MSNBC. We are thrilled to have her talk to WOW Dems about her experiences and tell us what she is doing now.

WOW Dems sponsored a table at AsiaFest on Saturday, May 3. Several members attended to promote our club and all of our activities. The voter registration committee sent their members out into the crowd seeking to register new voters and give information regarding the registration process.

Many WOW Dems will be heading to downtown Dallas at the end of June to participate as delegates to the state convention. We will also be working with the Ladies Room, an opportunity for women to network and participate in programs focusing on issues of interest to women. While this event is NOT a fundraiser, The Ladies Room is currently soliciting donations and sponsorships to cover costs. Follow this link to help support this great effort. You can find more information on the convention here and by liking the Ladies Room page on Facebook.

I want to remind you that WOW Dems members Sameena Karmally and Denise Hamilton are both candidates for office on the November ballot. We are proud of them for taking this big leap and want to support them in every way. Denise has invited all WOW Dems to her campaign launch event on May 30th. Please visit their websites to find volunteer opportunities and to make a donation. With our help, these terrific candidates can WIN.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
