Our movie fundraiser on June 25 at Angelika Plano was a success. Over 50 members and friends gathered to watch a screening of The Invisible War, an award-winning documentary about sexual assault in the military. The film followed the tragic stories of several women, stories that are now known to be the same for thousands of victims who were accused of lying, told to keep quiet, told that the attacks were “an occupational hazard” of military service and were denied services. Our excellent panel of women Veterans: Lisa Skier of Grace After Fire, Cindi Koehn and Penny Phillips, WOW Dems members, captivated the audience with their comments on the ongoing struggle.
Recent news from the filmmakers is that a few courageous advocates for change who appeared in the film received letters of appreciation from the Commander of U.S. Central Command, Gen. Lloyd Austin — the senior commander for U.S. military operations in the Middle East and Central Asia. They were invited to speak after a screening of THE INVISIBLE WAR. They had a solution-focused conversation with some of the nation’s most senior commanders, discussing leadership and how to improve the culture and overall experience for survivors of sexual assault within the military.
