We had a successful WOW Dems kickoff this past Thursday with more than 45 people ready to get women activated in politics in North Texas!
In addition to electing our officers and taking the first steps for getting our organization up and running, we had a very interesting program on legislative advocacy with Denise Rodriguez of Planned Parenthood of Greater Plano and Jeanne Rubin of Equality Texas. Both women shared the hot topics for their respective organizations currently being debated in the Texas Legislature as well as some inside nuts and bolts to being successful at lobbying the legislature.
Some takeaways from our panel include:
- Building a relationship with your representative by meetings, phone calls, and emails. Constituents who are known to the representative and their staff are much more effective in advocating for specific policies.
- Importance of keeping pressure on representatives in the final 40 days of the 2013 legislative session. There are still lots of bills that will have a serious impact on Texans, and it’s important for us to continue to let our voices be heard by our representatives. Watch for action alerts, and make calls and send emails when important issues come up.
- Don’t forget to share the messages about what’s going on in the legislature and opportunities for action within social networks through word of mouth and social media.
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our event. We look forward to seeing you at our next quarterly meeting on July 11. Our program will focus on the Texas State Board of Education and their process for adopting science and social studies textbooks.
